Methodology

For the Salt Lake profiles, I gave out questionnaires to about twenty people. After someone gave me back a questionnaire, I interviewed the person, usually for an hour, to be sure I understood the responses. I then reviewed the final profile with each person I could still contact to be sure it was right.

For the online profiles, people filled out the online version of the questionnaire. For a few of the respondents, I interviewed them by asking more questions by e-mail. As time went on, I no longer had the time or energy to continue doing interviews in such a manner. Consequently, the online profiles are not as in depth.

A Copy of the Questionnaire Used

All information collected here is for a personal project focusing on Salt Lake gothics in response to recent media attention. My purpose is to increase awareness about the subculture and eliminate some misconceptions. Information I collect will be used as part of a web site which will include pictures and profiles of various people. Responses in part one will be in the profile, the other information is to help me in a critical examination of gothic culture. I may edit responses (for space or relevance), but please answer all questions honestly and completely with as many details as possible. Let me know if there is any part you wish me not to include on your profile. Also tell me if you want me to review the final edit with you before I begin the web site creation. In a pamphlet titled Not My Kid: Gang Prevention for Parents, created by the Utah Attorney General's Office and the Utah Commission on Criminal and Juvenile Justice, gangs are defined as "a group of people who have a common name, sign, or identifying symbol, and who engage in criminal activity." By this definition, do you consider Goths a gang? Why or why not?
